Total retail spend in New Zealand for the 28 days ending 28 April 2012 was $2,398.4 million. This represents a marginal increase of 0.1% from the previous 28 days and an increase of 2.0% from the 28 days ending 28 April 2011. Compared to April 2011, April 2012 was down in the Clothing & Footwear, Department Stores, Books & Stationery and Travel & Accommodation categories. However, National spending on Recreation & Entertainment has jumped 15.8%, with spending in Cafés/Restaurants/Bars and Home & Building Supplies up 7.1% and 7.6% respectively.

Total Canterbury spending continues to increase, despite decreases in five categories. This increase is largely due to a 134.7% increase in Recreation & Entertainment spending. New Zealanders up and down the country were getting out and about in April with Recreation & Entertainment experiencing increases across the board including Nelson 35%, Tasman 29.6% and Marlborough 23.6%. Perhaps as a result of the increase in Recreation & Entertainment spending, Cafés/Restaurants/Bars also received a boost, increasing in every region from 2.5% in the West Coast to 10.0% in Nelson. Books & Stationery were not the flavour of the month, down in every region except Otago and Manawatu-Wanganui up 0.6% and 2.2% respectively.

Travel & Accommodation spending decreased in both the North Island (-1.1%) and South Island (-4.6%), despite increases in Marlborough (15.6%), Gisborne (13.4%), and Northland (10.8%). Travel & Accommodation spending was also down in Metropolitan areas (-4.0%), while Non-Metropolitan areas showed an increase of 1.0%.

Northland and Nelson both experienced big spending increases. Furniture/Appliances/Homewares spending was up 19.6% and, despite the overall decrease in Travel & Accommodation spending, in Northland spending was up 10.8%. Northland showed the biggest increase of any region in the Health Goods & Services category, up 8.2%.

Total spending in Nelson has jumped compared to April last year despite a 9.5% decrease in Books & Stationery spending and decreases of 6.5% in Furniture/Appliances/Homewares and 5.4% in Clothing & Footwear. This increase is largely due to leaps in Recreation & Entertainment (35%), Home Building Supplies (16.3%) and Cafés/Restaurants/Bars (10.0%).

Pumpt has been working with Subway stores all over New Zealand for around 5 years, more recently focusing on Local Store Marketing – Posters, Coffee Cards, Footpath Signs, Flags, Keyrings, Letterbox Distribution and more! So we thought it would be great to join the Subway team in Kingsland to get to know the brand on another level! Logan tackled bread cutting, while Sophia was in charge of salads. Logan said the best part about working at Subway was, “getting to make his own awesome sandwich at the end.” We might have to get them working at Subway more often!

If you own a Subway franchise, ask us about the great Local Store Marketing offers we can help you with.

Total retail spend in New Zealand for the 28 days ending 28 February 2012 was $2,408.5 million. This represents an increase of 2.6% from the previous 28 days and an increase of 3.9% from the 28 days ending 28 February 2011. Compared to February 2011, February 2012 was down only in the Books & Stationery and Recreation & Entertainment categories. Department stores had a very strong showing, up 8.6%, as did Travel & Accommodation, up 8.4%. Home & Building Supplies also continues to show some life, up 5.8%. Discretionary Retail spend in general seems to be on an upswing.

Regionally compared to February a year ago, Canterbury had expected increases across the board of 20%+ in most categories except Supermarkets, Fuel, and Building Supplies. This spearheaded the South Island to some big year-on-year gains, but the North Island also did fairly well. One interesting dynamic was between the Department Stores and the Furniture, Appliances, and Homewares categories – both of them up around 10% in the South Island, but in the North Island Department Stores were up 7% and Furniture, Appliances, and Homewares was only up 0.6%. Elsewhere, Southland’s Café & Restaurants were up 11.3%, Recreation & Entertainment was down big in Otago, the good folks of Marlborough spent up large on Clothing and Footwear (up 12.3%), and spending at Fuel & Service Stations was up 7.1% in Non-Metro areas but only 3.4% in Metro areas, Home & Building Supplies were up over 10% in Gisborne, Nelson, Southland, Taranaki, Tasman, and Waikato. Books & Stationery seem to have levelled off a bit in Metro areas (down 0.3%), but Non-Metro areas were still down 5%.

Retailwatch can be used to monitor trends in specific categories that are relevant to you while also building a broader picture of the overall retail environment.
